Project Overview

The NovEED project objective is to recycle acid and base solutions from spent salt solution coming from industrial neutralisation process streams. An electrodialysis process separates ions using ion-selective membranes, which effectively concentrate the ions in a multi-membrane cell stack. The electrodialysis process is itself a well-known process today but just used for the recovery of high-value organic acids such as lactic acid. However, even these electrodialysis processes have a low degree of efficiency and a high-energy demand. This is the reason why the process is currently only used for specialized chemicals recovery and not for high demand acids such as sulphuric acid or hydrochloric acid.

Despite the common use of electrodialysis in the process of desalination, the present project does not have as an objective the improvement of the desalination process. The NovEED project's main purpose is, as mentioned above, focused on the recovery of acids and bases in an industrial process like in mining and galvanic applications. The opportunity for reuse of acid and base solutions from the effluents results in avoiding spent acid streams to be discarded, e.g. those involved in metal mining or processing. The end-user will be able to achieve significant savings in operational costs because of the recovery, rather than disposal, of both acid and base solutions. The end-user will not have to buy chemicals used to neutralise their effluents, but will instead be able to recycle the acid or base directly to the main process, as well as being able to recirculate the water used to dilute them.

An overall reduction in the volumes of acids and bases delivered to metal mining and metal processing industries will decrease the transport of chemicals, thus lowering the likelihood of accidents involving hazardous materials, and should also reduce accidental spillages from containers located at the plant. The use of our NovEED system will reduce the chances of an accidental spill happening due to the much-reduced transportation of acids and bases from the production site to the end-user site. NovEED new technology intends to reduce the energy consumption needed for the electrodialysis process. The adoption of the NovEED technology will set new standards in metal and rare earths mining, meeting the strict controls of water disposal and use in Europe.
